How to Price Handmade Baby Products (Premium In, Premium Out)

Baby-safe materials cost more on purpose. Price them like the promise they are, and make sure the boutique split still pays you.

Baby products carry a pricing paradox: the materials cost more than almost any other fiber craft (organic cotton, double-gauze muslin, nickel-free snaps), and the buyers expect that. The premium is the promise. Underpricing baby goods doesn't win customers; it makes them wonder what you cheaped out on.

The cost of a swaddle

  • Double-gauze muslin (1.2 yd): about $5.40
  • Binding + trim: about $0.85
  • Care + brand labels: about $0.45
  • Gift box + tissue: about $0.75

$7.45 in materials. $28 retail is a 73% margin over materials; add about 45 minutes of cutting, binding and finishing at $15/hour ($11.25) and the all-in is $18.70. Note the gift packaging line: baby goods are bought as gifts more than almost any category, and the box is part of the product. Cost it in, and beautiful presentation stops being quiet margin loss.

Price for the boutique from day one

Baby boutiques are the natural wholesale channel for this craft, and they buy at 50% of retail. Our $28 swaddle wholesales at $14: $6.55 over materials, but $4.70 short of the $18.70 all-in once the sewing is paid. At 2× all-in, wholesale wants about $38 retail. If your retail price can't survive that split, wholesale vs retail pricing shows how to fix it before the boutique asks, because they will.

Sizes, batches and trust

  • Sizes are separate costs: a 12–18M romper uses more fabric than a 0–3M; cost each, even under one price
  • Lot-tracked batches: record which fabric lot went into which batch; parents and boutiques both value a maker with answers
  • Middle sizes carry the volume: sew deep where the sales are, not where the size chart starts

Baby product pricing mistakes to avoid

  • Absorbing the organic premium instead of pricing it: the material story is why they're buying
  • Retail-only pricing: baby is a wholesale category; build the split in early
  • Gift packaging as a freebie: the box, ribbon and tissue are the product's first impression
  • One cost across sizes: bigger babies use more fabric, and the math should know

Premium in, premium out, with numbers a boutique can trust. Keepsel for baby product makers tracks premium fabrics by the yard with true per-product costs, and from the Maker plan lot records; pressure-test your swaddle price in the free wholesale price calculator.
